Gutters in Whiffletree
Large houses finished within about five years of each other. Big roofs put more water through each downspout, and that sets the size of everything.
What Sets These Houses Apart
A real estate guide gives Whiffletree's build years as 1977 to 1982 and describes its houses as large.
A larger roof means more water arriving at each outlet. If the gutters are the size and layout of the late 1970s, overflow in hard rain is a sizing question before it is a cleaning question.
Sizing for a Big Roof
Gutter capacity depends on the roof area draining to each downspout, the pitch, and how hard it rains. In central Plano a ten-year storm reaches about 8.35 inches per hour for five minutes. A contractor replacing gutters here should count the square feet above each run and say why the quote is five-inch or six-inch, and why it has the number of downspouts it has.
Signs the existing layout is undersized:
- A clean gutter still overflows at the middle of a long run.
- Water shoots past the gutter below a roof valley.
- One downspout serves two roof planes.
See gutter installation for how size and outlet count are chosen.
Storm rate: NOAA Atlas 14, Volume 11, central Plano. It describes rainfall, not what a gutter will carry. Build years: one real estate guide's neighborhood profile, read October 5, 2026. It describes listings, not every house.
More Roof, More Water at Each Corner
The same arithmetic applies on the ground. A large roof section through one downspout delivers a large volume to one patch of clay. On these houses, extensions or buried lines are not an extra. Ask for them in the same quote.
Asked About Whiffletree
Is six-inch gutter overkill?
On a small ranch, often. Under large or steep roof planes it is a reasonable answer to overflow. Ask the contractor to show the roof area behind the recommendation.
Will bigger gutters look out of place?
From the street the difference is slight. Larger downspouts are more noticeable; placing them at inside corners helps.
Overflow on a Big Roof?
Say where it spills and whether the gutter was clean at the time. That tells a contractor a lot.
