Adding Gutters to Bare Eaves in Plano
If your house has gutters over the front door and nowhere else, or on the front and not the back, this page is for you.

In Brief
A roof edge without a gutter drops its water in a straight line a foot or two from the slab. You can usually see the trench it has cut in the bed below.
Adding runs to those edges, each with its own downspout carried away from the wall, finishes the system. New gutter can be matched to old in profile and color, or the old can be replaced at the same visit.
How to Tell Which Eaves Need One
Walk the house after a rain and look down, not up.
- A narrow washed-out strip in mulch or soil, parallel to the wall, means water is falling from the edge above.
- Mud splashed on the bottom courses of brick means the same.
- Soil pulled away from the slab in summer along one side more than the others points to the side that gets soaked and dried hardest.
The foundation engineers' guide puts it simply: check that gutters and downspouts exist. It does not say on the front only.
This site has not found a count of how many Plano houses were built with partial gutters and will not offer one. If yours was, you already know.
Joining New to Old
When the old gutters are sound
A contractor forms new runs in the same profile and the closest standard color, and ties them in at the corners. Aluminum fades, so a new piece beside a twenty-year-old one will look new for a while.
When they are not
If the existing runs are spiked, sagging or leaking, adding fresh gutter around them means paying for two visits eventually. Price the whole house both ways. See gutter replacement.
Every new run needs somewhere to drain
A new forty-foot gutter collects a lot of water that used to be spread along forty feet and delivers it to one or two points. Plan the downspout endings before the gutter goes up: extensions and buried drains.
Not gutter work: filling the washed-out trench, regrading beds so they slope away from the slab, and replacing mulch. A landscaper does that after the gutter is in.
Doing It in Stages
If the whole house is too much at once, ask for the quote split by side. A sensible order is the side where water lands closest to the slab with the least slope away from it, then the side with the largest roof area above it, then the rest.
Questions People Ask
Why would a house be built with only some gutters?
Gutters over entries keep people dry at the door and cost a builder very little. A full system was an upgrade. This site has no figure for how common that was in Plano.
Will new gutters match my old ones?
In shape, yes. In color, closely, with the difference fading over a few years as the new finish weathers.
Does the HOA need to approve added gutters?
If it reviews exterior changes, ask. Matching the existing color usually makes that a short conversation.
Gutters on Some Sides and Not Others?
Tell us which sides are bare. A contractor will measure those edges and price them.
