Gutter Installation in Plano

A gutter system is a short list of decisions: which eaves, what size, how many downspouts, and where each one lets go. On Plano clay the last decision is the one that matters most.

In Brief

A contractor measures every roof edge that sheds water, forms gutter to length in the driveway, hangs it with a slight fall toward each downspout, and runs the downspouts to the ground.

Ask that the quote say where each downspout ends. A foundation maintenance guide written for clay soils gives five to ten feet from the building as the target.

What Gets Decided at the Measure

Which eaves

Every roof edge that drains toward the ground is a candidate. Leaving the back or the sides bare saves money on the day and leaves a line of roof water falling beside the slab. If budget forces a choice, the contractor can price the house in stages; see adding gutters to bare eaves.

What size

Five-inch K-style gutter with 2-by-3-inch downspouts is the usual residential setup. Six-inch gutter with 3-by-4-inch downspouts moves more water and is worth asking about under large roof planes, in roof valleys, and where a second-story roof empties onto a first-story one.

How many downspouts, and where

Long runs need an outlet at each end or one in the middle. The contractor should walk the yard with you and point to where each one will discharge: onto a slope that falls away from the house, into an extension, or into a buried line. A downspout that ends at the foot of the wall concentrates the whole roof section's water on one spot of clay.

How it is hung

Hidden hangers screwed into the fascia, spaced closely, are the current standard. If the fascia is soft the screws will not hold, which is why a careful installer probes the wood first.

Why This Matters More Here Than in Sandy Country

A storm with a one-in-ten chance of happening in any year reaches about 8.35 inches per hour for five minutes in central Plano, and holds roughly 2.5 inches per hour for a full hour. Those are NOAA's numbers for how hard it rains, not a statement of what a particular gutter will carry.

The soil that receives that water is Blackland Prairie clay, which swells wet and shrinks dry. Engineers who write about slabs on such soil recommend keeping roof water from soaking in next to the building.

Not gutter work: regrading the yard, French drains for groundwater, and anything involving cracks in the slab or brick. A gutter contractor may point these out. A drainage contractor or a structural engineer deals with them.

What a Day of Installation Looks Like

  1. 1

    Old metal comes down

If there are gutters already, they are removed and hauled off, and the fascia is checked.

  2. 2

    Gutter is formed on site

Coil stock goes through a machine in the trailer and comes out as one piece per run.

  3. 3

    Runs are hung and sealed

Corners are mitered, end caps and outlets are sealed, and the fall is checked with water.

  4. 4

    Downspouts and endings

Downspouts are strapped to the wall and finished with whatever was agreed for the last few feet.

Questions People Ask

How long does a whole-house installation take?

Many single-family houses are done in a day. Two stories, wood repair or buried drain lines add time. The contractor will tell you when quoting.

Do I need HOA approval?

If your association reviews exterior changes, get its answer first. The rules page lists what to ask.

What will it cost?

Published ranges are on the cost page. A national guide puts seamless aluminum at $6 to $12 per linear foot installed.
