Gutter Guards Compared, for Plano Roofs
Guards are sold harder than any other gutter product. Here is what each type does with oak leaves, acorns and a Texas downpour, without a sales appointment.

In Brief
No guard ends maintenance. Each one trades a full gutter for something smaller: debris on top of the guard, fine grit under it, or water overshooting in the hardest rain.
A national cost guide lists guards at $15 to $45 per linear foot installed, which can exceed the price of the gutter underneath. Get the per-foot figure in writing.
The Four Types
| Type | Keeps out | Weak point | Upkeep |
|---|---|---|---|
| Metal screen or expanded mesh | Leaves and acorns | Oak tassels and small debris slip through or snag | Brush off the top; lift a panel to clean under it now and then |
| Micro-mesh on a frame | Nearly everything, including shingle grit | Fine mesh can film over; very heavy rain may sheet across it | Brush or rinse the surface |
| Solid cover with a curved nose | Leaves and sticks | Depends on water clinging to the curve; fast water on a steep roof can overshoot | Clear the slot; hard to see inside |
| Foam or brush insert | Large leaves | Holds seeds and grit, which sprout | Pull out and wash, or replace |
Much of the guard market is franchise and national-brand sales, with a salesperson, a demonstration and a price good for one night. A local gutter contractor can usually fit a metal screen or micro-mesh product at a per-foot price without the presentation. Compare both before signing anything.
Matching the Guard to the Tree
- Live oak over the roof: the spring tassels are the test. They mat on coarse screens. Micro-mesh handles them better but needs brushing after the drop.
- Red oak, pecan or elm: big leaves in fall. A plain metal screen does most of the job.
- No trees, just roof grit: guards are optional. A yearly cleaning costs less.
Plano rain is the other half. A ten-year storm reaches about 8.35 inches per hour for five minutes here. Any cover that slows water at the roof edge will be tested by that, so ask the installer what happens at roof valleys, where the flow is concentrated, and whether a splash diverter is included there.

Before You Buy
- Ask whether the guard slides under the shingles. Some roofing warranties care about anything tucked under the first course.
- Ask what the warranty covers: the material, clogs, or overflow. Read it.
- Ask your HOA if covers visible from the street need approval.
- Have the gutters cleaned and checked for fall first. A guard over a sagging gutter hides the problem.
Not gutter work: shingle or underlayment questions raised by a guard that tucks under the roof edge are for a roofer, and for whoever holds your roof warranty.
Questions People Ask
Are gutter guards worth it?
Under heavy tree cover, usually, because they turn two or three cleanings a year into an occasional brush-off. With little tree cover, the math favors paying for a cleaning when needed.
Can guards go on my existing gutters?
Yes, if the gutters are sound, clean and correctly sloped. Many guard jobs start with a cleaning and a few new hangers.
Why are quotes for guards so far apart?
Product, brand and sales model. The published range runs from $15 to $45 per linear foot, a threefold spread before any discounting.
Want a Guard Priced by the Foot?
Say what trees hang over the roof. A local contractor can quote a screen or mesh without a sales pitch.
