Gutter Replacement in Plano

Nearly two thirds of Plano's homes were built between 1970 and 1999. A gutter that went up with the house is now twenty-five to fifty-five years old.

In Brief

Replace when the problems are spread along the system: several leaking seams, runs that hold water, rust-through, or hangers that no longer grip.

Replacement is also the chance to fix what the first installer got wrong: too few downspouts, downspouts ending at the wall, or eaves that were skipped.

Signs the System Is Past Patching

  • Seams leak in more than two or three places, or leak again a season after being sealed.
  • Water stands in the gutter days after rain. The run has lost its fall and rehanging it means taking it down anyway.
  • Spikes have been re-driven before and are loose again. The holes in the wood are worn out.
  • The metal is creased from ladders, split at the back edge, or chalky and thin.
  • Paint is peeling on the fascia directly below the gutter line, which means water has been getting behind it for a while.

One bad corner on an otherwise straight, tight system is a repair.

What Tear-Off Shows

Nobody knows the state of a fascia board until the gutter in front of it is off. On a Plano house from the 1970s or 1980s the board has had four or five decades of Texas sun on one side and gutter splash on the other. A good quote says what happens if soft wood is found: a per-foot price for replacement board, agreed before the day, instead of a surprise.

A national cost guide lists removal of old gutters at $1 to $2 per linear foot. Ask whether haul-away is included.

Housing shares: American Community Survey estimates for Plano, as gathered October 2026: 13.8 percent built in the 1970s, 21.6 percent in the 1980s, 28.6 percent in the 1990s. Removal price: HomeGuide, November 7, 2025.

Not gutter work: rotted roof decking or damaged shingles found at the eave belong to a roofer. If the drip edge is missing or rusted through, the gutter contractor and a roofer may need to coordinate.

Change These While Everything Is Down

Downspout count and size

If a run overflowed in the middle with a clean gutter, it needs another outlet or a larger one.

Where the water ends

Extensions or buried lines are simplest to add with new downspouts.

The eaves that were skipped

Adding the missing sides now costs one trip instead of two.

Questions People Ask

Can new gutters reuse the old downspouts?

Sometimes, if they are sound and the right size. Mixing old and new finishes usually shows, and most quotes replace both.

Should I wait until the roof is replaced?

If a new roof is coming within a year or so, do the roof first or at the same time. Roofers work at the eave and can dent or loosen new gutters.

Is my older home eligible for a city rebate?

Plano's Great Update Rebate covers homes 30 years or older but requires at least $20,000 in improvements and approval before any deposit. Gutters could be one part of a qualifying exterior project. See the rules page.
